You might also want to note the article in November 1958 QST, Recommended Tube Types for Amateur Short-Wave Receivers, on page 22. A good discussion of why certain types are used in certain circuits; sharp cutoff, remote cutoff, etc. ARRL members can get the article from the archive on the website.  This predates the frame grid and beam deflection tubes, but is a good overview of the technology at the time of the HBR's publication.
