[HBR] help on local oscillator

Hi: All enjoy hearing about everyone's projects. Working on a homebrew superhet, building it backward from audio stage/audio preamp/plate detector/bfo  so I can test functionality as each stage is completed . I am now on local oscillator, trying to use a glass envelope 6j5 for  the schematic in the 1965 ARRL handbook(page 97, diagram 5-14 c. I seem to be getting a really raspy l.o. signal. Think my power supply is reasonably clean, wonder if anyone has some pointers for me. Could it be ac from the filaments causing the problem? I'm new to attempting receivers, interested in anyones suggestions to correct this so I can proceeed to IF and mixer stages. 73 Bill W9VC
