David,
The Eddystone 898 is a weighted slide rule dial, MUCH valued by builders. Don't be surprised if someone tries to talk you out of it, They talked me out of mine, but I didn't want to build a HBR-13C, too fancy.
The Ball Brothers drives (just the vernier drive) I think are still available because I've seen them advertized on the boatanchors reflector ....best to just ask there....or ask here. There are probably cheap copies out there too. I usually pick them up in old Heathkit junkers ....lots of parts rigs ouit there under the tables at swapfests. By the way, the Heathkit LMO assemblies make great VFOs. The best (my opinion) tuning mechanism is still the anti-backlash worm drive out of a BC-221 which you can pick up at swapmeets for <$10. Just a little more difficult to mount. That mechanism was used on several older transmitters and receivers. The homebrew LWM-3 Transceiver comes to mind.
Walt and others probably has some good ideas too
I don't know how simple/complex of a transmitter you are looking for.

I think the Eddystone is horizontal from shape of the box. It was in storage, I found it, and put it in the garage. Still not opened from 1960s.
Where do you get Ball Brothers vernier drive? Is this just the drive, no dial? I was thinking maybe for the home brew XMTR VFO.

David,
If you have an Eddystone 898 and the room, use it, no question.
If you have an Eddystone circular dial, it's much better than the National dials because of the Ball Brother's vernier drive. If you have a National ACN or ICN circular dial replace the mechanism with a Ball Brothers vernier drive (used on all the Heathkits and others). You will be amazed at how much smoother the tuning is and it's a slightly better ratio, Instructions in the Hints and Kinks section.
