[HBR] Iron powdered slugs

I am trying to construct a permeability tuned oscillator from the July 1964 QST. The
plan calls for an 8 mm diameter by 19 mm long iron powdered slug with a 4 mm hole
through it. The author says he used the slug from a surplus 455 KHz IF
transmformer.
Does anyone have any experience with PTO construction and does
anyone have a source for this slug?
This is the basis for both a transmitter
VFO and a heterodyne mixer for a HBR styled receiver.
