If this is done, it's a very good idea to insert a resistor so that the 
resulting B+ is the same as it was before the change. A 5Y3 at full 
ratings can have significant voltage drop, and the rest of the rx 
doesn't need the higher B+ that silicon will provide.

Resistor and diodes can go in an old tube base, too.
