Hi, DW -

A good product detector should handle a large range of input
signal in a reasonably linear way, and should provide good
isolation between oscillator input and the other stages (so the
BFO doesn't feed back into the IF chain).

A good place to start would be with the Pullen mixer. See
some of the papers that are on the Glowbugs website:
