Very interesting, thanks!
Unfortunately, all this puts me in the "too much information" category!
I found that the oscillator coils that were labeled "80M" actually
seem to be 40M coils, that the "40M" coils actually seem to be for
the 10Mc or so SWL band, etc. I will have to very carefully sort
through all my coils and see if they were wound for the original
mixing scheme, or if the guy who built this HBR-14.5 used his own
mixing scheme, or what.
The previous two owners or this HBR and coil set were pretty
much stumped by this same aspect too.
Good news, is that when I find what really are supposed to be
oscillator coils, that they are far more stable than what had
originally been labeled oscillator coils (tapping actually
done correctly). I think I had been plugging mislabeled RF coils
into the oscillator, no wonder it was so unstable :-).
In the meantime, I probably have to fix that RF gain pot.
Any suggestions for replacing the 2W 7500 ohm unit? Mouser has
some 3W 5K and 10K WW's for a couple of bucks.
At the same time, the AC power wiring in this HBR is completely
insane, the AC fuseholder is mounted with its lug a tiny fraction
of a millimeter from the power chokes (caused me some consternation
until I stuck a sheet of plastic in to stop it from arcing over...)
and the AC power transformer is on this hokey bracket.
Will probably re-do all this with an IEC inlet and a grounded
power cable.
Tim.
