I've build two or three complexified versions of it, never the real 
thing.   However, I think it would be an ideal match to a two-tube 
transmitter.   I don't see how you'd get better performance out of 
three tubes plus a rectifier.

The issue will be driftiness but an hour of warm-up should take care 
of that.  

If you want to cut the drift you could use a 5350 kcs IF (and 
crystal) with a 1650-1850 kcs LO to tune 3500-3700 and 7000-
7200.   A second 5350 kcs crystal in any of the common 'rubber 
crystal' circuits would make a great BFO.
