I've had good luck with a 6SB7Y mixer 6AC7Y Colpitts local oscillator both in
ceramic sockets. Used 6 mix iron powder toroids and NPO ceramics. Of course
a good ceramic double bearing tuning cap is necessary. The combination of
these micanol based octal tubes and other parts will give you SSB quality
stability and if
you follow the recommended oscillator injection levels you will get that "pop
out of
the noise" signal reception. 6SB7Y was a popular converter in the early
fifties ham radio lit, said to be superior to the 6SA7 in both gain and noise. de
