Thanks to all who replied with ideas!
The sockets were purchased a couple of years back from Antique Electronic Supply; the 7-pin sockets were the only ones with an oxidation issue.
I normally use a soldering gun rather than a small iron; the heating dynamics are a bit different but it has usually worked out OK for me. My solution to the problem of oxidized terminals so far has been to clean them to shiny metal with an emery board, then pre-tin them before mounting the sockets. It works but is time consuming; plus I wonder about the integrity of the contact with the tube pin.
