Tim,
I have the QST CD-ROMs from 1950-1964. Every page is a .tif file, which should be readable by any graphic program which will handle this format, including GIMP.
The schematics print fine and are quite usable, but do note that the scanning process makes most photos pretty much unreadable.
I think much later versions of the CD-ROMs (after QST went to electronic layout) used .pdf files, also readable by the corresponding LINUX program.
