[HBR] enamel coated verses silk or cotton coated

Various old radio projects specify coils made of fine wire.
The old LITZ wire that was cloth...silk or cotton coated is hard to
come by these days so
I was wondering if replacing LITZ with the readily available copper
enamel coated wire was
a bad thing to do when building regen recievers.
Sometimes coils are specified to be wound with thicker 20 or 22 guage wire.
Is it OK to use teflon coated wire for such coils if the original
intent was an insulated coil
of silk or cotton?
