ball drive and a 10:1 string drive?"

The Drake 2-B uses a 4.5 inch drum driven by a (stainless?) steel shaft that
is necked down to about 0.1 inches. There are a little over 1.5 turns of
string around the small shaft. It also drives a conventional 7 inch slide rule
dial with a separate dial string off the top of the drum through 2 pulleys
at each end of the dial. This drive works very smooth (very little friction)
and is cheap and simple.
