As I have said many times on this list, I firmly believe that the HBR-11 is
the best first time project. It is built in two steps which makes it easier
for a first time builder to get it going. It is not a compromise. Properly
constructed it works as well as the HBR-16. I would suggest a slightly
larger chassis. The size Ted used gets pretty cramped. It also makes
modifications and additions difficult.

As far as parts are concerned, I find that they are still available.
Although you may not be able to always get the exact part used in the
original article, a suitable substitute shouldn't be all that difficult to
procure. It sounds like you are an experienced builder, so I doubt that a
little improvising would be a problem for you.

On a personal note,I can't state emphatically enough how rewarding receiver
projects are for me. I've built plenty of transmitters, linear amplifiers
etc.; but since I got the receiver bug, I don't even think about those
projects anymore. There is nothing more exciting than tuning in the world
on something you constructed yourself. If you have the itch, I urge you to
scratch it. You won't regret it.
