G3 ??? is continuing to auction original NOS Electroniques coil sets
for the G2DAF home brew receiver. Selling prices are gradually
coming down (last batch sold at around $30) and I figure they'll
eventually reach my number.
The current auction is at:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5837714525
However he says "Not suitable for the Mk1 design only using cascade
RF stage or 6BZ6 RF and ECC85 mixer. Mk 2 coils not available."
That means these coils are for the 'early Mk I' I believe -- the one
using a cascode 6CW7-6BE6 front end. That one is interesting,
certainly an excellent receiver for the time, but NOT the equal of
the Mk 2 which is probably the best practical (you could build it
without an engineering degree or machine shop) homebrew ham band
receiver ever.
The problem is that the Mk 2 uses a push-pull front end requiring
center tapped coils. The Mk I designs are single ended and these
coils presumably were made for that. I don't know why he specifies
they're for the cascode version only but the seller is good about
answering questions if anyone's interested in bidding.
The early design could surely be adapted to use a 6EH7 RF stage and
triode mixer with minimal effort and would be a fine performer.
Does anyone know if Electroniques ever made a set of coils for the Mk
2 design?
He also has some other items of possible interest to the receiver
builder; here's a nice looking two speed dial assembly:

Sort of like the National MCN but (a) two speed, and (b) appears to
have a molded plastic face/housing. It has always been a curiosity
to me that no American maker made one with a molded plastic enclosure
and a ball drive. Olsen and others did import a fairly cheap-
looking Japanese dial of that design.
There are also bandswitch parts, coil forms, and a couple of 260
mmf/section 3-gang tuning caps.
Thanks to the gentleman who told me privately that this coil set
originally cost £35.00. WOW.
