I finally found the article about Linear Tuning using an ARC-5 transmitter 
variable capacitor.  It is in Ham Radio magazine, June 1989, p. 40.  Its called 
"Linear Tuning With a War Surplus Capacitor" by John Pivnichny, N2DCH.  The 
article is 6 pages long and goes into a lot of theory and curve fitting.  You 
need to study it to see if you can make use of it in your case.
