Bill,

I remember seeing an article on using the ARC-5 tuning capacitor to get 
linear tuning of an oscillator.  I don't remember for sure, but it think it was QST 
in the 80's.  If I find it I'll let you know.  In the meantime, maybe someone 
else remembers seeing it.

I'm new to this group, but I have been thinking of building a receiver 
somewhat like you're working on.  I would duplicate one of the HBRs if I knew where 
to get the parts, but in the meantime I have LOTS of other parts around here.  
I may just build a simple rack and panel receiver for 75 meters AM 
(primarily) with a basic 455 kc IF.  There was an article by W2NJR in the April 1953 QST 
called "Design Notes on a Specialized Phone Receiver" along these lines, 
although I would leave out some of the "Specialized" stuff to begin with!
