Thank you Bill!   I have the '65 edition; I'll look for one of the post-
1968 ones.   I'm sure they're easy to find.

My '65 SSB For The Radio Amateur does talk about another 
interesting receiver.   It looks like it started out as a DCS-500 but the 
RF stage is a 6AK5 (questionable choice, but the author used the RX 
as high as 6M ...) and the mixer a 6J6 -- an excellent choice, for the 
time.   Also he took a lot more pains with the 1st oscillator than 
most builders and gives it good marks for drift and sensitivity to 
voltage changes.   And he did a nicer job with the lattice filter, taking 
it far enough to skip the LF 2nd IF entirely.   

I haven't looked at it too critically but this is another example of what 
could have been done with the handbook design.
