This is a *very cool* story and pictures.   The receiver looks like the 
first version of the G2DAF design and the mention of crystal filters 
confirms that -- the Mk II used mechanical filters (or in some 
versions, just one) and put the meter on the other side; it was 
probably less often constructed in any case.

You can read this story between the lines and see that one reason 
for homebrewing in Britain at that time was cost -- the university radio 
club fellows had *no* money for the hobby.   With our colleges and 
universities today dealing with some students wanting to park a 
second car, how often would that now be the case in the U.S.?
