The SS-1R is dual conversion on all bands except 40, where it is single
conversion. The VFO tunes 6.0 to 6.5 MHz and the fixed IF is 1.0 MHz. The first
(tunable) IF is 5.0-5.5 MHz.
Both mixers are 7360s in fully balanced configuration. There is a single hi-Q
input tuned circuit with a unique image rejector, and the antenna used *must*
present a low 50 ohm SWR or there will be all sorts of weird responses.
The stock version had AM selectivity from the IF transformers, SSB and CW
from xtal filters. There was even a motor (!) to zip you from one end of the band
to the other instead of having to spin the dial 40-50 times.
There was supposed to be a matching SS-1T transmitter, but it never got
beyond the prototype stage.
SS was obviously going after the Collins S-line market, but without a
complete, transceive-ready line of gear that was a lost cause.
Good writeup in Electric Radio some years back.
BAMA has the manual.
I have considered balanced 7360s or 6JH8s for the proposed Southgate Type 8,
but am leaning towards Pullen mixers instead.
