Actually, the truth is that one of the very nice things about ham radio 
is that there are a bunch of related hobbies in there.   DX, 
ragchewing, emergency preparedness, traffic handling -- and building 
new 'vintage' equipment.   It's really foolish, the food fights that 
sometimes get started between one group and another.  

Oh, and BTW, not all of those super micro rigs will outperform a well 
designed 1970 +/- vacuum tube rig.   The only thing that put the FT-
101 clearly ahead of a good vacuum tube transceiver was its size 
and weight -- it was in nearly all respects a marginal performer.   But 
it was solid state, and that was where the marketplace wanted to go.
