Some ideas I've used that haven't been mentioned yet.....

1) "Sandwich" front panel. Use a thin piece of clear Lexan, Plexiglas or 
Perspex the same size as the front panel. (Yes, twice as much drilling, but 
you can use the panel as a template). Between the Lex/Plex/spex and the front 
panle you "sandwich" a piece of Mylar tracing film on which the various 
labelings have been printed. Helps to have access to a big printer and a CAD 
package! Lotta work but looks sharp and the lettering will never wear off.

2) Do nothing. Most of my homebrew projects have no labels on the controls 
because I know what they do anyway, from building the thing. Really shakes up 
visitors to the shack, too. At least one commercially-made rx (RME-69) did 
this, on the theory that if you didn't have the sense to read the manual and 
find out what knob did what you shouldn't be using the rx in the first 
place....
