I just went over the schematic of the HBR-8/11.  You're 
right...there's an on/off switch for the BFO.  Also just the=
 output 
of the BFO is switched on or off.  The plate voltage is still on.=
  
Which means it's still oscillating.  Very interesting!  Perhaps=
 this 
was, as Microsoft sez nowadays, a feature?
