Bill,
hope your  not an English teacher.  I Use an adjustable of spade bits and a
block of wood behind the stock.  Feed the drill bit in very slowly so the
bit will not grab the stock.  I drill press will be the tool of choice of
drilling tools, and if you can find an adjustable hole bit that will give
you a better cut.  Also there are many hole cutters like you use to cut
holes in doors to mount a door knob - the are made by Black & Decker and
other.  They come in various sizes in 1/8th inches increments. OR look in
the Granger Catalog page 1153  -  do not get sticker shocked.  My best
