Dear Dar,

Thank you for making contact.
This quake was much worse than the September 4th
event because it was closer to our city and shallower.
This is a major major disaster.

I'm happy to be able to write to you and say that Mary
and I are well but very shocked. It's just beginning to hit
us that Christchurch will never be the same again and
goodness knows what the longer term impact on people will be.
Work has been very quiet for me these last few months and this
will only make matters much worse. But I'm not alone.

Angela returned home a few weeks ago
and is 12 weeks pregnant, so she is our total focus just now.
We are so looking forward to the big day, August 26th.

Our home is strong, warm and is largely undamaged. We have
water and electricity unlike the other 80% of Christchurch folk.
Water is being distributed to schools so people can get it.
There is absolutely no sewerage, so it's a hole in the garden.
We are being asked to stay in our homes these next three days!
We seem to be well organized in many ways.
We had 5 big aftershocks last night over 4.5 so only got 3 hours
sleep in our safe room. Angela slept more thankfully.

There are hundreds still trapped in town which has been cordoned
off. It's wonderful that rescue teams from UK, Australia, Japan,
Korea and USA etc are coming. It's a humbling experience
to know that so many care. I feel we are being readied for a big
jump in casualties though. Fires have broken out and it rained all night.
Mother nature is so powerful. We are so small.

May I ask two favours of you as tears blur my view of the screen:

If you've been meaning to do something of late and have
put it off, please consider doing it now. If you've been meaning to tell
someone lately that you love them, please consider saying it now.
Be free with your hugs.

We could all do with a pile of hugs just now and if you pray,
please send some for the people of Christchurch.

With love and warm best wishes,

David, Mary, Angela

Arnie Coro, CO2KK, International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region
II Area C Emergency Coordinator, advises users of the 40 and 20 meters
bands to "be aware of possible (earthquake) emergency communications
traffic taking place in and around the affected areas of New Zealand's
South Island, where Christchurch is located."

He continues: "This is a
city of about 400,000 population and it was hit pretty badly because of
the proximity of the epicenter of the earthquake and the fact that it
was registered at a very shallow depth and very near to the city.

"The
propagation on 40 meters more likely to cause problems to the New
Zealanders from unintentional QRM coming from the Americas is the window
that starts
about two or three hours before sunrise and lasts until
sunrise at this end. A similar pattern, with a slight time shift shows
up on 20 meters, too."

Specific emergency communications frequencies
will be posted as soon as the information is available.
