Hello everyone...
Well I've heard from about 5 or 6 people interested in building one of these
Surface Mount Dummy Load Kits at our meeting in March.
I've changed to subject line on this e-mail so it no longer says "[QRP-L]"
I think the first message got lost in some peoples mail wizard or filter
systems.
The group treasury has enough money to order these and just repay the
treasury at the meeting, so what I need now is a count of people interested.
So far I have:
K0AWB
W9HZC
K0NEB
K0EMC
WB0QQT
If you are also interested please reply to this e-mail before Feb. 3, 2006
(next Friday... one week.) I'll then order the kits so they get here in
time for the meeting.
If you have ever wanted to try building something with surface mount parts
this is a good in-expensive kit to try it on. We have 3 or 4 people in the
group with surface mount experience to help you get started.

Subject: [QRP-L] New NorCal Kit Announcement
The NorCal QRP Club is pleased to announce their latest kit, the NorCal SMT
Dummy Load kit. This kit contains everything you need to build a QRP Dummy
Load, using surface mount parts. There are several surface mount kits
available today, but there are some builders out there who are not sure that
they are capable of dealing with surface mount parts. They have probably
held off buying some of these new kits because of their fears. Now they
have the opportunity to experience surface mount construction at a very
cheap price. When Tony Parks developed the SoftRock Receiver, he came up
with the idea of doing a dummy load kit using 44 2.2K 1206 sized surface
mount resistors to build a dummy load. He did a few kits, but announced
that he was discontinuing it last fall. NorCal contacted him and asked if
we could take the kit over and redesign it just a little and offer it as a
kit from NorCal. He very graciously agreed, and we would like to thank him
for all of his help with the project.
Bob Okas, W3CD, was given the task of designing a dummy load, but also added
a couple of features. One, he added a detector circuit so that you could
use it with a VOM meter to measure power. Second, he added a third output
pin so that you could use an RF Probe such as the North Texas QRP Club's
Accuprobe kit, for even more accurate measurements. Bob layed out the
board, we tested it and now you see it. The cost of the kit is only $7.50
including postage in the US, $10 DX. The kit includes a double sided,
plated through, silkscreened, soldermasked board that meets NorCal quality
standards, 50 2.2K 1206 resistors, a .01uF 1206 capacitor, a 1N5711W SMT
diode, and a through hole pc mount BNC connector. All you have to provide
is the labor and solder. This is the cheapest kit that we have ever offered
and think that it will be quite popular. It is fun to build, and it does
improve your soldering skills immensely. The manual is up on the NorCal
page under NorCal Kits at www.norcalqrp.org. We invite you to download it a
nd take a look. You may use paypal to order, or send a check to the address
on the website. The kits are in stock and ready to ship immediately. No
waiting on this one.
This is an excellent first time kit for any builder. It is easy to do, and
you get a quality dummy load when you are finished. Enjoy, Doug, KI6DS
