If you're touching the base with the counter's antenna or a probe, try
holding it just a tad away from the base instead.  You might try a bit of
wire with the insulation on it.  You might be detuning the circuit with
the added inductance/capacitance of the counter, assuming you're not using
an o-scope probe (and maybe even then).

I've got probably the same freq counter you do; I often have to play with
it a little to get a solid reading without actually contacting the circuit
under test.
