hams? Or is this stricktly for receiving only? Such as weather pics...etc.
Can I build my own system?

Well, equipment can be as little as an HT, and a hand held beam, or all the
way to very large beam mounted on Az/El rotor system.

Benefits can be many things depending on each person. Basicly was we are
talking is ham radio repeaters in the sky. We have FM ones that are alot
like working your local 2 meter repeater, or SSB ones that is just like
working DX on HF! You can talk voice, or you can work the digital satellites
to send mail to other hams around the world. You can send pictures like jpg
files, software programs, etc thru the digital satellites. Some hams even do
slow scan tv, and other modes like rtty, psk31, etc. Instead of sitting on
20 meters waiting for the band to open, you can look at your tracking
program, and see what times the satellites will be in view, and know when
you will have your opening!

A person can get into satellites a little bit, or jump in with both feet!
That entirely up to you.
