[Hammarlund] Hammarlund Reflector Activity - HQ-140-X

Dan,
I changed the title here by adding "HQ-140-X."
Thanks for the note. I acquired this HA-140-X a couple of years ago and it sits patiently. It was my error in referring to it as an "XA" or "X-A" model, previously. The former owner - local to me - had done an excellent job of aligning the radio but not sure what method he used. My challenge is to bring it back to its original appearance. That will not be difficult in this radio's status. The brown knobs are a striking part of the appearance of that radio - and I am pleased to have them all still there and in excellent condition. The most previous owner took care of various issues - such as the power supply and interstage capacitors.
When I get closer to the finish of the cosmetics, I will get back into the alignment to see what is needed, if anything. The radio works quite well as it stands. That is not my usual path - generally the cosmetics are last thing to do. But this radio arrived with the order of restoration reversed.
Thank you for your thoughts.
Happy Thanksgiving.
73,
-Bill, W9MXQ

Bill, on the 140X are you planning to do a sweep alignment of the 455 kHz IF (amplitude, symmetry, and coincidence!) or simply peak all the IF cans on a fixed 455?
I’ve used both approaches and, in my opinion and experience, the sweep alignment is the better approach. That said, in addition to the necessary equipment, of course, you better have a long, rainy weekend and nothing else to do since, at least for me, the sweep method is a long, long, over and over process. No start-at-Z4-and-finish-at-Z1 about it! We’re talking about simultaneous 8 levels of chess here. 🙂
