[Hammarlund] The List; It’s Alive! ISO SP-10 Front Panel

Try the photo. I am not sure what model you are talking about. The
SP-10 is an SSB converter which works on many receivers. I think perhaps
you mean the SP-110, an early Super-Pro. Some of these receivers, I
think the early ones, have wrinkle finish paint, later ones are smooth
finish. I have a BC-779, a military version of the airways model. I
refinished the front panel in glossy black many years ago. The labeling
is engraved so can be renewed with lacquer stick. Wrinkle paint is
available in rattle cans. Getting the right amount of wrinkle requires
drying with some heat, not a lot, maybe 150F. You can test small samples
to find the right heat for baking.
The receiver is not difficult to work on except for the tuning unit.
I did disassemble and clean it but that was long ago and I don't think a
lot of disassembly is necessary. Be careful of the adjustable IF cans.
They have a mechanism underneath for moving one of the coils up and
down. When restored these are very good receivers.
The drift can be mitigated by adding about a 5 picofarad N-1500 cap
across the oscillator capacitor. That is what Hammarlund added to the
late SP-400. They may be difficult to find so an N-750 will do. The TC
cap mounts under the left side cover of the tuning unit, easy to get to.
Don't toss it and congratulations for saving it. There were a couple
of different power supplies but they are similar. The early Super-Pro
had a connection for a loudspeaker field coil which worked as a power
supply choke. Not found on later versions.
