I have seen the date stamps on the filter cap of an SP-600. I am
reminded of the scrambled serial numbers for Bausch and Lomb lenses. I
tried to track this down for historical purposes at one point and
discovered that B&L used a different series of numbers for each type of
lens, so B&L Tessars had different numbers from B&L Protars which were
still different from B&L microscope lenses. Further, they used colored
dots on many lenses, some indicated coating some other things. I have
this stuff all filed away on my archive drive but its not very useful.
There are other products with scrambled serial numbers, sometimes
because the manufacturer did not want the age to be known and sometimes,
as with 1950s Graflex cameras, they just were very sloppy. Graflex has
duplicate serial numbers on some products. OTOH, Schneider, another
German lens maker, has completely progressive serial numbers for many
decades.
