Ron,
Make sure that you are on the range starting at 7.85 or above to align the 3035 IF stage since the receiver operates in triple conversion only on the highest ranges. Also make sure the AVC is in the off position.
25 volts P to P sounds way too high for the 60 Khz. IF input. I used my HP-8640B with HP low frequency converter for the low IF alignment and the maximum level when using the HP 11710B converter is 0 dbm which is .2 volts RMS or .64 volts p to p. and that was plenty for alignment. Basically you want to keep the signal generator output just high enough that there is a clean reading at the L8/C44 junction since higher levels can cause clipping and gain compression throwing off your results.
My 180AX had a couple of interesting problems created by a previous owner. One 455 khz IF transformer had a failed padder cap and he had bypassed that stage which was easy to find and fix. More confusing was when I tried to align the 60 Khz. IF strip and the readings didn’t make sense. The original owner apparently thought he could take the selectivity shaft out to gain better access to the 455 Khz. IF section by just removing the retaining clip on the shaft but it takes far more than that to take the switch shaft out. But when he had the clip out he apparently let the tension off the detent selector which also establishes the end stops and the switch shaft was rotated 180 degrees from where it should be and his fix for this was to rotate the knob 180 degrees. Of course that didn’t select the right R/C combination for the various selectivity choices so it didn’t work properly. That part was almost like restoring a badly built Heathkit.

Subject: [Hammarlund] HQ-180 Alignment issues
Perhaps the members of this august group can offer some advice. I have been working on an HQ-180 ( non A ) that at some point in the past had been “adjusted” and “rewired” leaving somewhat of a mess. I have it working (?) and have been trying to go through the alignment. I started of course with the 60 KHz IF section thru the demodulator as prescribed in the manual injecting an unmodulated 60 KHz sine wave at the junction of T5 & C28 and measuring the negative DC voltage at the junction of L8 and C44. I proceeded to peak T5 thru T11 with apparent success however I note that the manual alerts me to the need to reduce the input signal to keep the reading at or below –5 VDC. It never gets above –4 VDC with a 25 V P-P sine wave input. Is that a simple matter of insufficient drive voltage? If 25 V P-P isn’t enough what is the recommended value? NOW moving on to the 3035 KHz alignment, I injected an unmodulated 3035.00 KHz signal at the grid of V2 ( pin 7 ) and tried to peak L4 and T5 thru T1 as prescribed BUT I can not get a peak! in all of the cans the maximum reading occurs with the adjustment all the way bottomed out (max inductance). My first thought was that the frequency is not centered but as far as I can tell all of the frequencies are spot on.
Any suggestions will be appreciated as usual...
