Ron,
There is quite a bit of information on repairing or fixing the Telechron
movements. I ran into this with an old AA5 clock radio. Most pages tell
you that it is usually due to the oil drying up and/or caking inside
gumming up the gear movement. They suggest using a 100watt incandescent
bulb (can you still buy those?) or a soldering gun like the Weller 8200's
that use a wire for the heating element. They put the motor upside down on
the heat source then put one drop of 0 weight motor oil (like Mobile One I
think) and apply heat until it sucks in the drop of oil. I think they do
that one more time and that I think frees up the old oil so it moves
freely. Other pages do like you said the repair person does and opens the
motor but it is suggested that the heat and oil trick be tried first before
opening the case.

I am not sure if that helps but sure helped me on the Telechron motor for
the AA5 clock radio.

Good luck.
