[Hammarlund] Original HQ-129-X

The first ads for the HQ-129-X, c.1945, showed a rather different
style from the familiar ones. The meter is on the front rather than
being behind the dial escutchion and has calibrations for db above S-9
the same as the HQ-120-X. I wonder if the pictured receiver was only a
prototype or mock up or if any were actually sold. Hammarlund evidently
found they could not build the receiver to sell for $129 and
discontinued them for a time. When the model was brought back it looked
a little different despite having the same model number, and, of course,
the price was higher.
The HQ-129-X and HQ-120-X have a couple of features that strike me
as odd, for one thing the order of bands on the dials has the broadcast
band on the outer part and the highest frequency band on the inner part
where the compression of number is greatest. It should really be
reversed and is on most multi-band receivers. Nonetheless, its a very
good little receiver.
