[Hammarlund] HX-50 problem cropping up

Hi Bob,
I didn't see any replies to your questions.
Sorry, but no good suggestions. I did want to let you
know that I am also having a problem with the VOX
system. On my HX-50, MOX and SSB VOX work ok, but
on CW VOX, at the tap of the key the relays pull in,
but will not unkey...no matter where the delay is
set. I can manually unkey the relays by prying the
contacts up...but seems to only take very slight
pressure to do this...not like when they are pulled
in, say in MOX. Do you know how the VOX delay for CW
works...components, etc? I was thinking that R-149B
and the .22uf (C239)formed a RC timing ckt to control
the delay. There seems to be more to it than that...I'm
having trouble following the schem. thru all the wafer
switches...hi. Good luck with your HX-50. If you find a
fix for your problems, please pass it along...I would be
very interested. The tone on mine has not sounded very
good, but with changing a few tubes, it sounds a bit
better...but not as good as I would think a $500 xmtr
would have sounded when it was new.

Subject: [Hammarlund] HX-50 problem cropping up

Hi all,
As you may remember, I just replaced my electrolytics and the power
transformer in an attempt to resolve the chirping issue in my HX-50.
This was back in June and the radio has been working fine ever since
until just the other day. I now have a new problem. When I turn on the
radio now, I leave it it "standby" until I am ready to transmit. But,
now when I put it in "Mox" or "Vox" it goes into transmit and shows
power output on my power meter. The key seems to be ineffective. I do
not use a microphone. I have it on the workbench and noticed a couple of
times some sparking at the relays K101/102. I cleaned the relays well
again but no change. I also notice that the contacts on the relay are
floating. No change when I put it in mox or vox. I am assuming, but
shouldnt the relays be closed at some point? Either sitting at idle and
then when it is either keyed or put in vox, they should click into
another position? Any ideas where I might start looking? Im wondering if
the relays are bad. I have tapped them a couple of times thinking they
may be hanging up but that doesnt seem to have any effect. Any
suggestions would be great.

Thanks-Bob-W0YBS
