GA all,
Here is some short background info on this project.
When I first started messing with BAs, around 1999 or 2000
I ran across this HX-50 at a hamfest. I couldn't walk away
from it...its one of the best looking rigs made, to me at least.
However when I got it home, I found the pwr xfmr was shorted.
A short time later I ran across another one...long story, short...I
acquired it and put its good xfmr in the orig, slightly better looking,
transmitter. At that time , having little experience in serious restoration
work (not much better now)...some problems arose with this
action and ever since it has been under the bench.

During the Sep. CX, I worked a couple of HX-50 xmtrs which
renewed my interest in the project and have decided to try again
to get it going. So far I have done some cleaning and cked the xfmr
wiring, which is ok. Previously I had replaced the smaller 'lytics but
the can types remain. I have had the TO-6A on one of the 40/600
(C-175) caps for about 5 hrs now and its is pretty well hanging around
420V @1.5ma...a long way from its 600vdc spec (higher than  420
volts runs the current up to near 10ma of leakage). I don't think
it will go any lower. So, looks like I am gonna need to replace the
remaining can caps. What leakage current should a good 40/600vdc
'lytic have?

I will need a total of 20mf @ 1200 vdc ea. to replace C-174/175.
I can hang a bunch of 'lytics, in series, under the chassis, but would
rather have a neater solution. Anyone know of a source of 40mf/600
vdc cans. I didn't see any on the Hayseed web page. Or, same value
in axial 'lytics. Anyone else had to replace the cans, esp the 40/600
ones? I'm still looking on the web for info, but comments/suggestions
will be appreciated.

Tnx..73 de Bill K4JYS
