Over 140,000,000 submini tubes of one type made for use in over
22,000,000 proximity fuses in the run-up to the invasion of Japan.
I have never been able to find out what the type of submini was.
Those fuses were so secret that until Patton literally demanded that they be
released for use over land, no one but the U.S. Navy was allowed to use
them in combat, although we did give some to the Brits for the defense of
London. According to some, that alone prevented London from being
destroyed...or at least a good part of it.
The proximity fuses were used in the Battle of the Bulge with terrifying effect
on German troops. In at least one case, whenever American artillary began a
bombardment, there was a mutiny, German troops refusing to leave their
shelters.
I'd REALLY like to know exactly what type of submini tube those were.
