[Hammarlund] HX-50 snapping noise

Hi all,
As many of you might remember, I have been working on my HX-50
transmitter. It all started with a major chirp. In the process I
started recapping the rig. Each time I replaced a cap I turned on the
rig to be sure all is well. It all worked great up until I got to the
last multi-can cap setup.During this process I kept hearing a snapping
noise occasionally. I occasionally heard the snapping noise before
recapping as well but it wanst real bad, but I knew something was up.I
couldnt actually pin point the snapping noise and pretty much was hoping
it was one of the electrolytics. It was faint but there. So, I started
replacing the last 3 caps one at a time. I was mounting them
individually under the chassis and not replacing the multi-cap can
because I couldnt find one. The first cap went fine. Was getting the
usual output on the rig but I was still hearing the snapping noise. Went
to the 2nd cap and then everything went to pot. I fired up the rig and
keyed it liked I did on all previous testing but I noticed not quite the
output as before and then the rig hummed and blew the fuse. Im sure I
have everything hooked up correctly so Im thinking the transformer was
what was making the snapping noise previously and now I blew it. Any
ideas? Did I trash the thing? I hooked the old electrolytic back up but
I think it was too late now since I think I trashed the thing. Any ideas?

Thanks-Bob-W0YBS
