the dero 2f looks 100% like a standard sp-600 vlf and has all the exact same functions.
it uses all ceramic discs so one can assume that dero took standard military issue sp-600 vlf 31's and slapped their own front panel on them. there may or may not be some slight component variations such as resistor or capacitor values. but since only the manual for the standard sp-600 vlf exists (unless some lucky ham has one and hasn't spoken up yet) a comprehensive comparison would be difficult. the only difference I have noticed by looking at pictures of other vlf31s is that the dero uses round transformers instead of octagonal.
the dero's have engraved front panels that say dero research and development model 2f receiver.
and at the bottom center of the front panel there is a standard sized metal id tag that repeats the model info + contract data and serial number.
I don't have pictures of my set yet but you can see exactly what one looks like if you go to

hello everybody...I am new to the list
?
I have a dero 2f ...just like an sp-600 vlf.
wonder if anyone knows who dero made them for...fcc, cia, nsa ? and how many may have been made?
?
the only references I could find on the net were for a calculator they made and a legal dispute they were involved in.
?
dero research and development I imagine is long defunct at least by that name. they were located in Huntington ny.
?
there is a dero enterprises inc. headquartered in canada but that has a branch in Bayville ny (only 10 miles away!)
?
I called them, but a man with a heavy foreign accent answered and I think he either got frustrated with me or didn't want to answer my non-profitable questions and he hung up. dero enterprises webpage says that they are into injection molded plastic.
?
that's all I have been able to find so far...not much
?
any ideas ???
thanks

Can you specify how and where the name "dero" appears? Is it on the original
aluminum front panel or on some sort of subsidiary panel attached to it?
Does the name "Hammarlund" appear at all?
The SP-600 was a workhorse of a receiver and it was adapted by several
contractors to specialized operations. Usually this involved an external
HFO, BFO and/or detector. In those cases, the contractor typically attached
his own name plate over the Crystal-Selector / Crystal-Trimmer section at
the upper right corner of the front panel and left the Hammarlund name plate
at the center.
Is this a "normal" SP-600 VLF? No non-standard tubes, no circuit changes, no
external HFO or BFO?

I have an SP-600 JX-14 that is missing the two 1", black knurled knobs on theupper right of the receiver. The little small knob down below is non=original. If anyone has these to spare or can suggest a decent substitute, I'd like to hearfrom you.
Playing with it, I see that there is no antenna trim, no "peaking" control. Is thatnormal or is it right in front of me and I don't see it :-) ...

No antenna peaking control on this receiver. The
standard SP-600-JX has two small knurled knobs, about 5/8th
inch diameter for the fixed crystal oscillator and a shorter
knob of about 3/4 inch diameter for the dial lock all
anodized black. The -17 version has two additional 5/8th
inch knobs. Three are anodized red, one black. I don't know
a source for these but suspect a machinist could make them
easily.
