Yes these receivers would be just fine. I am an AMer. The HQ-140X is an upgraded HQ-129X with miniature tubes rather then octals. Another good receiver is an SX-71. Back in the 50s thousands of hams used a Viking II with an SX-71. If you want to also have a decent SSB receiver too maybe consider an SX-96 or SX-100. But for just AM, you won't go wrong with an HQ-129X or HQ-140X.

Have my Johnson ranger II finally finished and ready to go. Iam now looking for a receiver to pair it up with. I use the receiver for am phone ONLY. no CW,no SSB. I wanted to stay with Hammarlund ,because I had started back in the 70's with one. I have gotten the choice down to a HQ-129X or a HQ-140X. These seemed a good starting point, from what I have been reading about them. Since AM is a new thing, to me ,would these two rigs fill the bill, so to speak? Are there other ,newer Hammarlund rigs that may work ,just as well on am? Iam open to any and all suggestions. are any of the latter rigs ,just as good or better than my choice.
Figured there was no point in re inventing the wheel, when it came to looking for the best receiver. Would appreciate any suggestions .
