I suspect "great" is best left up to the individual users. My R-388 and
SP-600-JX17 are the most often used as band cruisers with the SP-600
slightly ahead due to my higher perceived AM quality. My HQ-170A-VHF is a
good SSB/CW amateur band receiver but suffers from very good AM quality.
Staggered tuning the IF section, with some loss in selectivity, can cure
some of that along with some modification of the audio sections. We can
probably debate the pros and cons of many perceived "great" receivers for
days and weeks and probably never receive a consensus of all users. My
most used amateur band receivers here are the National HRO-500 and the
Flex 5000 for all around performance, sensitivity, and selectivity on AM
and SSB. I have several other receivers but they are much further down
the list.
