My understanding from past research and conversations is that some
manufacturers made presentation models for specific events or individuals,
usually involved with engineering/design, or operation of the company.
Maybe retirement of the lead engineer, or a specific project or contract.
It was years ago but I think some of these had chromed panels and may have
sported special tags commemorating the person/event. There would likely be
some other evidence of this were the case (like new condition, etc).
With the SP-600 as with the R-390A, numerous examples have turned up that
were 'pimped up' (for lack of a better description) by a former owner. The
bare panels with polished brass bezels for SP-600s, and 390As with black
panels that conspiracy folks are certain means they were used by 'black
agencies' despite all evidence to the contrary. Some people just want to
believe and facts are just a minor inconvenience.
I'd bet not many folks went to the trouble of having a panel plated,
however. Easier to just strip and clear coat. So I'd almost bet that you
have one of those 2-3-4-offs for some presentation, Ross. Or someone
really, REALLY liked their SP-600.
As you say, Ken - the Hammy Hambone versions are pretty easy to spot. And
then there's the Learys; some of which will make your eyes bleed and others
that aren't too bad.
