Obviously, that cap is supposed to be there, so install it, and than go after the cause of the motorboating. This is usually caused by bad (open, or low value) electrolytic or bypass caps somewhere. Did you check those resistors? ALL of them? PITA, I'll admit, but there are certain "musts" if one wants a well performing radio.I have no way of knowing your skill level here, but I have found that the majority of "I just rebuilt it, and it won't work" are usually the result of mis-wiring / bad soldering / improper component identification ( was it a .1 mfd cap or a .01?). Parts "substitution" is also an area for trouble. All tubes correct and tested?Did you use brand new caps, or stuff that you had lying around in the junkbox? If the latter-"naughty". Always use fresh capacitors. You can use resistors of any age as long as the value is within spec-but the use of old (even NOS) capacitors is definitely not a good idea!Do you have a VTVM, or an FET meter? Check all the voltages around the detector, audio, and power supply circuits. Sounds like your trouble may lie here. ALSO-check that crude volume control circuit. Look for OPENS. Could be that the IF tubes are running full blast, and may be overloading the 2nd detector stage.
Phil Ochs? Yes, we are most likely related, but I have never investigated exactly how this might be. In the 1700s, two families of Ochs's came to America. The patriarchal heads of the two families were first cousins. One landed in Boston (mine), the other landed further South, and settled in Pennsylvania. All of us with that last name are descendants of those two original families. Good luck. A worthwhile project!ChuckN1LNH
