I know this sounds wierd to the boat-anchor community, but as one person pointed out, these old caps have considerable value.

Here's why--Few people in the radio community bother to do it, but the folks who restore vintage guitars, guitar amps and vintage audio components value original appearance in the chassis dept. This small detail can make a VERY large difference in the selling price.

SOME of these vintage caps are good, and can be used as-is. Most often, they are very carefully dis-mantled, and will have new film caps installed, and the package will be sealed up again. Original apperance is preserved. This requires very careful surgery, the use of lathes and jewlers saws, but IS done, as evidenced by the seemingly insane prices that these go for.

The economics of the boatanchor market does not justify this labor-intensive approach, but for other types of old gear, it is commonly done.
Word to the wise--you too can make bucks on e-pay from your junk!
