     SP-600ds are a lot easier to work on than they look. I 
am not sure what the black stuff is but suspect its copper 
sulfide. AFAIK, the only protective coating use on these RX 
was the MFP lacquer on some military sets. That can be a 
PITA depending on how it was applied. On my JX-17 it was 
sprayed on the dial gears and inside the turret where it 
covered some grounding contacts. Its very difficult to 
remove. Paint stripper will do it but is very slow. The RF 
modules were also glued to the turret frame with it. UGH!
