No such luck!
That one is the early production as seen by the panel colors. Ive been told
that those returned to the factory for service in NYC back then could get a
calibrator added.
I lived in Valley Stream then and think the radio came from the
Jamaica-Floral Park area but cant remember for sure, I wasnt driving yet.
The 6SG7 is a direct sub for V-3 and DOES require that pin 3 be removed from
ground for V-1.
Thanks for catching that and having me check my 129 folder.
After an alignment touch up for V-1 you should see an improvement for 20M
and up. If the gain is too much on the lower bands you can try going back to
the 6SS7 for V-3 or adding some R between the cathode of V-1 and L-20 to get
an acceptable balance. Maybe 270 Ohms to start.

Hi, Carl
Now, the one I have was definitely not the one my dad had, but he lived in
merrick at the time of the qsl, and was living in Poughkeepsie and about to
move upstate at the time you bought yours. Be funny if you got his old one!
Odds are pretty slim, I know.
Look at the pic I have on qrz. If you 'control/mousewheel' you can zoom in
(ctrl/0 to go back to original). The picture actually has enough resolution
to do this. You can see the switch and label. The unit itself is mounted in
the back corner of the chassis on that same side. And you can see that it's
a 'red letter' model. The cal osc is definitely later production, it uses a
miniature tube.
I got mine from a local ham who got it from an SK estate, which was supposed
to be the original owner.
One question I have, can you sub the 6SG7 for the 6SS7 with no changes? The
schematic shows only the 1st and 3rd IF tubes have pin 3 tied directly to
pin 5. The RF tube has pin 3 grounded and the 2nd IF has 390 ohms between
the two. The tube data sheet shows these tied internally.
Secondly, I mainly use the radio below 20 MHz. Will I see enough difference
to bother, or will this mainly increase sensitivity on 10 and 15?

Hmmm, I bought a HQ-129X used in 1956 thru an ad on the wall at Harrison
Radio in NYC, I lived on LI back then. It had the calibrator factory
installed according to the 1953 BOS that was included making it one of the
last runs before the 140.
The switch was in the same position but no added label.
Ive not seen another like it and it would be something if yours is the same
one. I sold it in 1968 or so and shipped to Indiana from NH.
