Just curious, I have read negative comments about acetone before. What is
wrong with it other than using it in a martini?

That often becomes a temporary fix as the residue picks up dirt.
In the 50-60's we found that the rivets used to attach those wipers to the
frame were the culprit and soldered them directly to the frame.
A good spray with your favorite fast acting grease and dust dissolving
solvent right at the wiping point finishes the job. Since the best solvents
of old are now banned by the nanny state I use disc brake cleaner that does
not contain acetone.
