Certainly, the gain-distribution question would have to addressed, 
but if done properly, there should be no problem.

Besides, the purpose of double-preselection in the SP-200 wasn't 
primarily for added gain: it was for added RF selectivity.

By keeping the voltages and currents lower, there should have been 
little additional noise.

One BIG problem with many of the attempted home-designed receivers is 
way too much gain in the IF strip...also too much noise.

In fact, some commercial rigs suffer from at least one of these 
problems: some have both.
