A cheap B&K Sweep-signal generator (or sweep-function generator), which 
has a  sawtooth sync output which I connected to the scope's external 
horizontal sync input.

Fed the swept-IF signal in at the mixer grid, and connected the scope's 
vertical input to the detector diode load.

Works a treat! :-)
