If you are not going to actually use the clock as a timer to turn the receiver on you are probably better off installing one of the quartz replacement movements. I am drawing a blank right now on who sells them but I believe it is Chuck Hurley who also refinishes Johnson transmitter panels.
If you stay with the mechanical movement it probably is in need of some oil. A trick for Telechron motors I saw published years ago advised holding the movement against an incandescent bulb until it is hot and then feed oil through the lube hole (if available) or otherwise around the motor shaft and as the movement cools it will be drawn inside. It is necessary to repeat this several times but it will generally quiet a noisy movement (or prevent a quiet one from becoming noisy).
I am not a fan of leaving vintage gear plugged in all of the time. If you do plan to leave it permanently connected then replace the power cord, make sure to use the proper fuse, replace the line bypass caps with modern line rated units, seriously consider replacing the old on/off switch, and generally inspect all of wiring that will be hot at all times. With the HQ-170A you have a second filament transformer always on and I would add a separate small fuse to protect this transformer.

Subject: [Hammarlund] HQ-170A Telechron clock
All,
Now that I have the HQ-170A fairly stable and awaiting an alignment, it is time to deal with the clock. The clock works fine and is fairly quiet. However, the switch knob is missing and the clock face is showing some discoloration which appears to be spot rust beginning to break through the paint. Are replacement clock faces available, or does anyone have a nice one they would be willing to sell? Does anyone know where I can get a replacement switch knob?
Thanks
Mitch KJ7JA
